Richard Bowen, Professor of Accounting

University of Texas at Dallas

Richard Bowen, professor of accounting, Naveen Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas, was a former business chief underwriter, Citigroup, during the housing bubble financial crisis meltdown and saw firsthand the fraud inside the organization. According to the Wall Street JournalCBS Evening News, and 60 Minutes, he is the Citigroup whistleblower who repeatedly warned Citi executive management about risky business practices and potential losses related to mortgage lending. Citigroup eventually stripped Mr. Bowen of all responsibilities and placed him on administrative leave. He subsequently testified before the Securities and Exchange Commission and provided them with 1,000 pages of evidence of fraudulent activities prior to the bank bailouts occurring three months later. His testimony has been widely quoted in numerous articles and pieces of litigation related to the meltdown, and he was a key witness the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in 2010.
