Investments & Wealth Monitor CE Quiz Instructions for CFP® Certificants


Investments & Wealth Monitor (I&WM) CE quizzes are accepted for one hour of CFP continuing education (CE) credit. Each quiz is based on five articles published in the particular issue. You may download the five articles in the I&WM section of the website. You must get 7 out of 10 questions correct to pass. Your score will be tabulated and your CE record will be updated automatically upon successful completion of the quiz. Cost for each CE Quiz is US$25. The Institute will report successful completion of the quiz to the CFP Board on your behalf. You must complete the following steps: Provide your CFP ID to the Institute. Enter your CFP ID in the Dashboard in the “Update my demographic information” section. The Institute will provide the information to the CFP Board and the CFP Board will notify you when this occurs. The Institute is not able to report to the CFP Board on your behalf if we do not have an accurate CFP ID. Please check your Dashboard account to ensure the information is in our database and is accurate.

I&WM CE Quiz, March/April 2023. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to educate clients about constructing a portfolio of alternative investments; explain the fundamentals of illiquid alternative strategies; discuss mean-variance optimization and portfolio construction for individual investors; explain the role that Bitcoin may play in diversified portfolios for institutional investors; and better understand nonconscious bias when selecting asset managers.

I&WM CE Quiz, January/February 2023. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to educate clients about whether to continue investing in China and consider geopolitical paradigms, trends, and risks; explain the pros and cons of liquid alternative strategies; discuss investment opportunities in private real estate; and understand the benefits, risks, and opportunities of central bank digital currency models.

I&WM CE Quiz, November/December 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to advise clients about protected lifetime income benefit strategies; educate clients about the use of annuities in target-date funds; explain direct index separately managed accounts for clients with taxable accounts; discuss long-term care planning with clients; and consider sustainable investing and the use of family values statements with clients.

I&WM CE Quiz, September/October 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to advise clients about long-term care planning;  discuss new SECURE Act rules for inherited retirement accounts; consider the tax benefits of the net unrealized appreciation strategy; educate clients about planning for managing market losses and the impact on retirement income; explain how to conduct a family wealth briefing; and understand the Prohibited Transaction Exemption 2020-02 for advisors who give investment advice to IRA owners.

I&WM CE Quiz, July/August 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to explain client risks and portfolio construction using a holistic approach to diversification; educate clients about hedge fund strategies; discuss turbulence in trend-following strategies; consider valuation models and due diligence for cryptocurrencies and digital assets; and understand the pros/cons of allocating to digital assets in client portfolios.

I&WM CE Quiz, May/June 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to understand how to integrate an ESG framework into their practices; explain how investing with purpose makes investment impact intentional; consider incorporation of climate risks in valuation processes and repricing across regions and asset classes; examine the implications of customized portfolio management through direct indexing; and discuss regenerative finance, which allows wealth holders to invest directly in models for solving social and environmental problems.

I&WM CE Quiz, March/April 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to understand the evolving roles of women in wealthy families; recognize the different mindset of female clients; learn how to help prepare clients for significant wealth for the first time and define goals; help clients understand life expectancy and the implications for retirement planning; and explain to clients the effect of inflation on financial asset returns.

I&WM CE Quiz, January/February 2022. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to explain the risks and opportunities of investing in private real estate; discuss inflation and positioning portfolios to manage potential risks; consider an outcomes-based framework as an option to improve retirement-income planning outcomes; weigh clients’ risk tolerance and risk capacity and consider forward-looking market risk when building portfolios; and illustrate the risks and opportunities for allocating to Chinese equities.

I&WM CE Quiz, November/December 2021. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to explain to clients the changing face of work and retirement (e.g., life expectancy, labor market trends, retirement benefits, accumulation versus decumulation); advise clients about tools to isolate and illustrate the impact of comprehensive retirement-planning decisions; view retirement healthcare costs as an annual expense, rather than a lump sum, to make it easier for retirees to plan and pay for; illustrate the positive benefits of reverse mortgages for clients who want to stay in their homes and have more cash flow to pay for expenses; and consider annuities as an option to improve retirement-income planning outcomes.

I&WM CE Quiz, September/October 2021. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to understand how to integrate portfolio investment capture to the investment policy statement process; explain to clients the purpose of the bond/fixed income portion of a 60/40 portfolio; advise clients about using quantitative tools to help inform the asset-mix decision for clients’ risk tolerance; explain return forecasting, risk forecasting, and portfolio construction to help improve the client’s decision-making process; and consider an alternate methodology for retirement asset allocation and rebalancing strategy based on liability matching.

I&WM CE Quiz, July/August 2021. After reading the magazine articles and taking the quiz, the certificant will be better able to understand clients’ personalities and how they support successful outcomes; communicate to clients investment risks and objectives; explain the structure, risks, and opportunities of cryptocurrencies and digital assets; advise clients about aligning goals with risk tolerance; and familiarize themselves with investment applications of machine learning to investment management.
