April 24, 2026 - Denver, CO — Sean Walters, CEO of the Investments & Wealth Institute, was recently featured in a Financial Advisor IQ article examining the growing role of financial advisors as family therapists and emotional guides—particularly when clients face estate planning decisions triggered by illness or end-of-life planning.
The article explores how advisors increasingly must navigate sensitive family conversations and interpersonal dynamics alongside traditional financial guidance. These conversations require a distinct blend of financial expertise and human empathy that is reshaping the profession.
The piece also highlights the Institute’s recent update to its Certified Private Wealth Advisor ® (CPWA®) certification program as evidence of this industry-wide shift. The human dynamics portion of the CPWA® exam—which encompasses ethics, behavioral finance, investor psychology, and family dynamics—was increased from 13% to 18%, reflecting the expanded expectations placed on today's advisors.
“Family dynamics are so much more complex,” Walters told Financial Advisor IQ. “It’s no longer enough in an AI (or post-AI) world for a knowledge professional to simply regurgitate knowledge. They have to provide empathy, judgment, meaning, and guidance.”
