IWI Honors Industry Leaders at Annual ACE Academy Conference

San Diego, CA – May 1, 2023 – The Investments & Wealth Institute (the Institute) presented five awards recognizing outstanding contributions to the investment and wealth management body of knowledge during a special awards ceremony at the Institute’s flagship annual conference, ACE Academy, in San Diego, California, on Monday.
Investment Consulting Impact Award
The Investment Consulting Impact Award honors individuals who have made an outstanding contribution and demonstrated commitment to the field of investment consulting, including contributions to industry-specific technology or advances in the advisor skill set.
The 2023 honoree is Edward Baker. Baker is Senior Managing Director, Currency Management of Mesirow Financial. Previously, he was Executive Chairman at The Cambridge Strategy, a London-based investment group, and served on the firm’s board of directors. Baker spearheaded the growth and development of the Journal of Investment Consulting since its inception in 1997 and served on the IMCA/IWI board of directors. He is currently a member of the board of directors of Quantal Group, an investment technology firm, and a trustee for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.
Wealth Management Impact Award
This award honors individuals who have contributed exceptional advancements in the field of private wealth management, embodied by the Investments & Wealth Institute Certified Private Wealth Advisor® (CPWA®) program. The award recognizes key innovations and thought leadership in any of the following CPWA knowledge domains: human dynamics, wealth management strategies, client specialization and legacy planning.
The 2023 recipient is Jim Dobbs. Dobbs is Program Director and President of Dobbs Education LLC. He was instrumental in the design, development, and delivery of the CPWA certification program since its inception in 2006. In addition, Dobbs has managed financial training and certification programs, including the CIMA, CPWA, and CFP programs, for the last 20 years. He brings his unique history and experience to the Yale School of Management and helps candidates through the certification process there.
Governance Insight Award
The Governance Insight Award honors the author(s) of a written work (e.g., article, paper, book) published in the previous year that has made significant contributions in ethics, legal, regulatory, or other relevant areas that affect the investment and wealth management professions.
The 2023 recipients are Stan Treger, Ph.D., and Amy E. Szostak, J.D., CTFA, CIMA®, STEP, for their article, “Sustainable Investing: A Trustee's Friend or Foe?” Treger is a Behavioral Insights Advisor and Szostak is the Director, Family Education and Governance, both at Northern Trust.
Journal Research Award
The Journal Research Award honors the author(s) of an original article representing the best writing for the previous year, is germane to investment consulting and/or private wealth management, and was published in the Journal of Investment Consulting or the Retirement Management Journal.
The 2023 recipient is C. Thomas Howard, Ph.D., for his article, “Predicting Returns Using Behavioral Market Barometers,” which appeared in the Journal of Investment Consulting. Howard is Professor Emeritus at the Reiman School of Finance, Daniels College of Business, University of Denver and Chief Executive Officer and Chief Investment Officer at AthenaInvest, Inc.
Investments & Wealth Institute Writing Award
This award honors Investments & Wealth Institute members for their excellent editorial contributions to the Investments & Wealth Monitor during the previous year. The 2023 recipient is Bruce Stewart, CIMA®, CAIA®, for his article, “Maintaining Mathematical Civility: Demonstrating Hedge Fund Utility.” Stewart is the Founder of SRS Family Office Advisory.
Honorable distinction was awarded to Avi Sharon, Ph.D., and Jennifer Gongola, Ph.D., for their article, “Bridging Client Biases in Retirement: Framing Effects, the Familiarity Principle, and an Income-Centric Approach to Planning.” Sharon is an Executive Vice President and Product Strategist, and Gongola is a Vice President and Behavioral Science Research Analyst, both at PIMCO.
